Abhyanga: Ayurvedic self-massage

Abhyanga: Ayurvedic self-massage

Daily Ayurvedic self-massage with simple, pure oils is a wonderful way to revitalise the body and mind and promote optimum health.

Taking a few moments each day in your self-care routine to de-stress can contribute to a rejuvenated body and a refreshed mind. By doing so, you’ll wake up feeling invigorated in the mornings and let go of the day’s stresses in the evening.

Abhyanga: Ayurvedic self-massage

This type of massage is used for prevention and self-care rather than as a cure, serving as regular health maintenance.

Consider incorporating this routine into your daily life if possible. Doing so can leave you feeling energised during the day and relaxed at night. Your muscles and joints will feel toned and soothed, and your skin will be soft and nourished.

Use a non-aggressive oil such as Jojoba, Sesame, Rosehip, or Avocado oil, preferably stored in a glass bottle.

  • Begin by warming the bottle of oil in a bowl of boiled water or by placing the bottle in a hot bath as you prepare.
  • Pour a small amount of oil onto the open palm of your hand, not your fingers.
  • Start massaging your body, beginning at the scalp and using circular movements. Focus more time on your head than on other parts of the body.
  • The general rule is to massage round areas (head, elbows, knees, hips) in circular movements and straight areas (arms, legs) in straight strokes.
  • Massage your ears and face. We recommend Rosehip oil for your face, as it has anti-aging and firming properties.
  • Massage the neck, both front and back, and the upper back.
  • Vigorously massage your arms, using circular motions on the round joints of the shoulders and elbows.
  • Gently massage your chest and belly in clockwise circular movements, following the digestive path of your intestines from the right side to the left side of the abdomen.
  • Massage your back to the best of your ability.
  • Massage your legs vigorously using straight strokes, incorporating circular movements around the hips, knees, and ankles.
  • Sit and take your time to massage your feet.

Allow the oil to be absorbed for 10 minutes, ensuring you are wrapped in a large towel to stay warm.

Take a warm bath or shower, remembering not to use very hot water on your head.

There’s no better way to start practicing taking time for yourself…
