Montserrat G. Mukherjee, founder of The Yoga Therapy Institute, has more than 20 years of clinical experience and she has worked with hundreds of clients, specialising in chronic pain, women’s health, breast cancer support, and lower back pain. She is a passionate advocate for safety in yoga and accessibility for all, and believes in the profound effects of human connection in education and health
Montserrat (Gómez) Mukherjee was born in 1967 in Madrid, into a humble family devoted to education. Growing up below the poverty line, she developed a strong sense of resilience and independence early in life. As a young woman, she moved to the UK in search of opportunities, where she worked her way up from manual jobs to the role of Head Buyer at a renowned London fashion store. She later founded her own international buying consultancy, becoming a respected figure in the fashion world and appearing in leading publications such as Vogue, Elle, and W Magazine. Alongside her global career, Montserrat nurtured her love for swimming, running, and water polo.
During this time, a significant health event introduced her to Hatha Yoga at The Life Centre in Notting Hill, London. The practice quickly became a vital support in her busy life and planted the seed of a new calling: to one day become a yoga teacher.
Following the birth of her daughter, Montserrat made a life-changing decision to leave the corporate world behind and dedicate herself to motherhood and yoga. Settling in Amsterdam with her partner, she began practicing Kundalini Yoga at a small local studio, eventually co-organising a teacher training and earning her 200-hour certification under Ravi Singh and Ana Brett of the New York Kundalini School of Yoga.
As she began teaching group classes, Montserrat quickly recognised the risks of one-size-fits-all approaches and the importance of adapting yoga to individual needs. This ethical dilemma led her to The Yoga Biomedical Trust in London, where she trained as a Yoga Therapist under the mentorship of Dr. Robin Monro, a pioneer in the field. There, she deepened her expertise in therapeutic yoga, with a special focus on herniated discs and lower back pain (CALBA method).
Even before graduating, Montserrat established her own yoga therapy studio in Amsterdam, beginning from a small attic room. What started modestly soon grew into a thriving clinic, offering private sessions and small group classes, and collaborating with healthcare professionals across Europe.
For more than 20 years, Montserrat has dedicated her life to Yoga Therapy, advocating for safety, accessibility, and compassion in yoga. She is renowned for her gentle yet fun approach, making even the smallest movements meaningful and joyful—especially for those who feel they cannot move. Her classes are collaborative, lighthearted, and deeply human, offering pain-free, supportive practices for those living with:
-Heart disease
-Parkinson’s disease
-Cancer, with a special focus on breast cancer support
-Herniated discs and lower back pain
-Autoimmune disease
-Burnout and corporate stress
-Musculoskeletal injuries
-Insomnia
-Anxiety, depression, and mood disorders
-Women’s health and wellness
Since 2011, Montserrat has worked extensively with women with breast cancer, continuously developing tailored yoga therapy support. She has also created corporate wellness programs for international companies such as Adidas, Heineken, and Rituals, focusing on stress management and burnout prevention.
In 2017, she fulfilled her vision of creating a professional hub for yoga therapists by founding The Yoga Therapy Institute, now one of Europe’s leading IAYT-accredited schools. As CEO, she feels “honoured to work with the best team in the world” and continues to fall in love with teaching every day. Dividing her time between the Netherlands, the UK, and Spain, Montserrat remains dedicated to guiding individuals on their path toward health, balance, and resilience—with warmth, lightness, and a deep respect for the human spirit.
