We are really excited to work with Suze Retera on one of the most popular modules in the Professional Development Programme at The Yoga Therapy Institute. Suze also teaches in collaboration with Montserrat G. Mukherjee in the Safety in Yoga Nidra and Relaxation for Yoga Therapy module, part of the 850-hour and 550-hour diplomas.

Suze is one of the most experienced yoga teachers in the Netherlands, with a background in psychology, Yoga Nidra training with Uma Dinsmore-Tuli and is a teacher with a gift for making the most complex subjects easy to understand and to put into practice.

The programme

Tension and traumatic experiences settle in the body and are often experienced as physical sensations. In an effort to escape these sensations, dissociation can become a go-to state, which results in a break in how the mind processes information. This can be an obstacle to recovery during cognitive therapy as well as preventing people from functioning in everyday life.

Physical practices are a very effective way to access and release tension, facilitate a more grounded state and create an awareness around dissociation thereby facilitating the healing process.

In this module, Suze will explain the way in which tension settles in the body, highlighting the roles of the nervous system, the fascia and certain muscles. Students will learn how different physical practices can facilitate the release of tension, create embodiment and the physical and mental effects of different movement modalities.
These include moving beyond the common restorative and meditative yoga practices and applying physical practice to create mobility, functional strength, tension release, balance and a grounded state.
As a facilitator you will learn:
  • An introduction to the nervous system
  • When and how to apply touch in a safe and trauma-aware manner
  • How to apply alignment in a functional way
  • How to read body signals
  • To understand the role fascia plays in tension and mobility in the body
  • To manage your own grounding and embodiment
  • To functionally apply physical practices in different situations and for different needs
